The St. John of God Retirement and Care Center (SJOG) is an essential
and historic element of Southern California. It was founded in 1942
by the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God, a 500-year-old order
of skilled nursing providers who traditionally take care of the
Pope and are bringing these unique skills and concerns to the people
of all faiths of Southern California.
SJOG opened in 1942 with just 12 beds but expanded in 1951 with
the original hospital building. In 1973 the first Alzheimer’s Center
in Los Angeles was dedicated at the Center. A three-story independent
living facility was built in 1989 and has been fully occupied ever
since.
The SJOG Retirement and Care Center today is a seven-acre, multi-level
care campus located on a half city block in the urban core of Los
Angeles, California. The Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God
own and operate this campus as well as St. Joseph’s Health and Retirement
Center in Ojai, California.
